Campus meals and expensive deals.

The nation’s leading student press law watchdog shows how students might be paying a hefty tab for that campus meal.

When I told readers on Sept. 16 about some of the often-overlooked stories college papers should be covering, I included campus food service.

There is a reason I suggested campus papers request food service contracts and health department inspection reports — because few people do. And as a result, schools can sometimes have some interesting provisions included in the deals.

In the Student Press Law Center blog, SPLC Executive Director Frank LoMonte gives an example.

According to the blog, the food service provider at the University of Central Arkansas food service provider included in its deal a “donation” to upgrade the school president’s mansion.

What fun things are in those contracts at your school?
